Byzantine Emperor Anastasius II coins

713-716 Following Philippicus' downfall a civil servant, Artemius was proclaimed emperor. He took the name Anastasius at his coronation in honor of his distant predecessor, two centuries before, who had also risen from the ranks of the civil service. Anastasius II retained his original name on most of his coin inscriptions, where it precedes his adopted name.
