1204-1215 The great-grandson of Alexius I, Michael Comnenus Ducas (aka Michael Angelus) fled Constantinople as the great city was being consumed by flames and crusaders alike. Settling in a remote area of Greece named Epirus he soon obtained for himself the title of Despot. His steady hand and persistence soon noticed him the attention of the various world powers who had interests in the region and with each he dealt with skillfull diplomacy. He was murdered by a servant for reasons unclear but power passed to his brother, the even more able Theodore Ducas. Although in power for a relatively lengthy eleven years coins attributed to him are exceedingly rare.
